The hats you need for summer

4 ways to wear a hat this summer

Hats are important. Whether you’re gracing the Queen with your presence at Royal Ascot or meeting mates in the park for a picnic, what you wear on your head is a top style priority this season. Lucky for you we have milliner to the stars
Awon Golding on hand to give some sage words of advice – if Lady Gaga loves her, then so do we! Here’s her pick of the perfect hat styles for four key summer events.

The weekend garden party

1. The weekend garden party

Grab the Pimm’s and dust off your sundress. British summertime is here and you’re not wasting a single moment of sunshine. The aim of this look is ‘effortlessly cool’. Lucky for you the shops are awash with gorgeous sun hats of all shapes and sizes, perfect for a garden picnic with your besties. Pair a wide-brimmed fedora or sunhat with a floaty floral dress for that perfect carefree look.

A day at the races

2. A day at the races

Go big or go home! There aren’t many opportunities to wear show-stopping hats but the races are a green light for all aspiring Eliza Doolittles. The horses aren’t the only things attracting attention, so add drama to your outfit with a wide-brimmed occasion hat with statement trimmings like oversized flowers and graphic feathers. Alternatively a smaller disc with eye-catching veiling and floral detailing is sure to be a big win in the style stakes.

3. Fun at the festival

Whether you’re clad in denim cut-offs or your boyfriend’s favourite band T-shirt, you’re going to be exposed to the elements as you shimmy from stage to stage. A hat is festival wear 101. Veto the ever-appearing floral garland (yawn!) and think outside the box – trilbies or fedoras keep you protected from the sun while you rock out, or simply sling on a fabric headband that frames your perfectly tousled ‘just crowd-surfed’ hair.

Hat for a best friend's wedding

3. Best friend’s wedding

First thing’s first – don’t upstage the bride! The key to the perfect wedding outfit is subtlety with a big helping of style. I’d recommend an easy-to-wear feathered fascinator. Once the bubbly is flowing and you’re throwing impressive shapes on the dance floor you won’t want to be thinking about your hat making a quick escape down the side of your head. Opt for a headband-based piece as they’re easiest to wear, with minimal stress about how to style.
